Position Summary
The Personal Care Assistant is primarily responsible for providing assistance in the personal care of residents, housekeeping, ADL (Activities of Daily Living), meal and laundry service.

Position Summary
The Personal Care Assistant is primarily responsible for providing assistance in the personal care of residents, housekeeping, ADL (Activities of Daily Living), meal and laundry service.
Essential Functions
- Assist in personal care (dressing/undressing, toileting, tub bath/shower, nails, hair care, shaving, hygiene, help with prosthetic devices, dentures, artificial limbs, hearing aids) of residents as individually needed.
- Daily, or as needed: make or turn down beds, empty trash, replace toilet tissue, offer clean towels and straighten/tidy room.
- Change bed lined in designated rooms.
- Wash residents personal clothing and return them to the resident’s room in a neat and organized way.
- Serve meals as assigned and assist in resetting the tables.
- Maintain food safety guidelines while assisting in food storage, prep and cleanup.
- Communicate any changes in condition of the resident to the LPN and Administrator. Attend/provide input for care plans.
- Complete assignment sheets daily noting unusual events and care unable to be provided.
- Distribute reminders for appointments to residents as directed.
- Maintain appropriate communication with resident’s family members.
- Be mindful of fire and safety procedures. Respond appropriately to emergencies.
- Attend resident assistant meetings as scheduled and participate in staff education/orientation programs and in-services.
- Assist residents to and from the dining room in a safe and organized manner.
- Maintain a clean neat atmosphere throughout the home on a daily basis.
- Approach tasks with patience and sensitivity, maintaining dignity.
- Utilize non-verbal cues, such as body language, to enhance understanding.
- Develop strategies for dealing with aggression, agitation, or wandering.
- Develop referral relationships with physicians, dementia diagnostic clinics, and other health care providers and support services.
- Provide dementia-specific consultation and technical assistance related to cognitive screening and individual and family caregiver issues to adult protective services agencies, aging and disability resources, and other county agencies, as requested.
- Monitor and address any changes in the person’s condition.
- Stay informed about advancements in dementia care and treatment.
- Identify aggressive or agitated behavior as part of the disease and use training to de-escalate and calm the resident and return them to a peaceful state.

Educational and Other Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- PCA or CNA with at least one year of experience working directly with multiple people with dementia or other memory care issues required.
- Expertise and knowledge regarding older adults, dementia, dementia care and support, family and informal caregiver needs, and challenging behaviors.
- Capability to promote mental stimulation and social engagement.
- Experience in a long-term healthcare setting preferred.
- Understanding of care of the elderly or chronically ill.
- Understanding of the chain of command and accountability in all functions of the unit.
- Must be dependable and willing to work as part of a team.
- Must possess or have leadership skills in interdisciplinary staff development, and resident/family relationships.
- Understanding of roles and functions of care staff and total health care team
- ServeSafe certification preferred.
